If you are at all concerned about your health, you probably understand that drinking soda (aka pop) is bad for your body. Soda contains chemicals, additives, artificial sweeteners, and can cause many different types of health problems. Why would anyone put such a thing in their body?
Although most health-conscious people know that soda is basically carbonated suicide, there are some who make a distinction between diet and regular soda. Some people think that diet soda is not harmful for their bodies, and they continue to guzzle this beverage as if it were healthy. These proponents of diet soda are just plain wrong.
Is Diet Soda Healthy?
The idea that diet soda is healthy is a big misconception. Unfortunately there is truly nothing healthy about diet soda. There is even scientific data to support the fact that people who drink diet soda are more unhealthy (and fatter) than those drinking regular soda. In a University of Texas study the facts were pretty clear. Sharon Fowler, the study’s author stated this:
“What didn’t surprise us was that total soft drink use was linked to overweight and obesity,” she went on to say, “[w]hat was surprising was when we looked at people only drinking diet soft drinks, their risk of obesity was even higher.”
What is even more shocking is that Fowler saw a correlation between diet soda drinkers and obesity. She commented that, “[t]here was a 41 percent increase in risk of being overweight for every can or bottle of diet soft drink a person consumes each day”.
If you weren’t already convinced then surely these facts will be enough to make you understand that diet soda is just as bad for your body as regular. Diet soda could even make you fatter than regular soda! This issue is more complicated than just risk factors and correlation. There is actually science that supports the fact that diet soda can cause people to become overweight.
Diet Sodas Artificial Sweeteners
There are artificial sweeteners in diet soda which actually cause a harmful hormonal response which increases the production of the hormone that stores fat. This hormone will also create an increase in cravings for sweet foods and refined carbohydrates. Do you think this might be bad for your body? You bet it is.
Some diet soda drinkers also use their beverage drinking habits as an excuse to eat unhealthy foods. They believe that drinking a soda with no calories gives them the flexibility to eat whatever they want. Of course this leads to overeating and consuming more calories than are needed in a day.
There are so many substitutes for artificial sweeteners now that there is no reason to subject your body to this kind of abuse. There are alternatives that help you drink beverages that won’t be harmful to your body. If possible, the best option is to drink water. You can add lemon to make it more interesting if you would like. Try experimenting with unsweetened iced teas. There are many varieties of tea such as black, white, green, oolong, chai, and red. Just replace your unhealthy diet soda with a healthy tea. If you really need that sweet taste, add a little stevia, a natural sweetener, to your tea.
Avoid Sodas all Together!
The bad news for soda drinkers is that this type of beverage should be avoided no matter what. Whether you love diet or regular soda, both of these choices are not healthy for your body. The good news is that you can choose a replacement beverage that is just as tasty, but much better for your body. Once you find a great substitute, you won’t even miss your diet soda.
