Get Off Your Arse and Live –The Dangers of Constant Sitting

Rest and RecoveryIs most of your physical activity directly related to fetching yet another snack?

Maybe you’re the kind of person who likes to sit around all day watching TV or messing around on the computer. It doesn’t matter how much your fingers and wrists move around; sitting still all the time is a great way to slowly kill yourself. In fact, scientists now link excessive sitting to diseases like diabetes and abdominal obesity.

If you really wanted to die, you’d at least do something interesting, like bungee jumping sans bungee. But just sitting there will kill you just as effectively, if that’s your goal. If it isn’t, here are a few reasons why just sitting around is going to do you in. It might be just the shock you need to get you moving again.

You’re just getting fatter

Did you know that over the past century, movie theater seats have gone from an average of about fifteen inches across to more than twenty? In many cases, the expansion has been even bigger. And in many cases, office furniture has both expanded and strengthened, on account of the heavy loads it must now support.

This is because our society has become undeniably fat. When it comes right down to it, fatness is becoming the norm, as two thirds of our adult population are either overweight or obese. But you know, all you need to do is half an hour or more of moderately intensive exercise (think of brisk walking), at least 5 days a week, to keep the fat at bay.

Melanoma is a more avoidable state than you think

Did you know that the human body produces Vitamin D while you’re out in the sunlight? It does. And did you also know that Vitamin D helps to ward off skin cancer? It does.

But did you also know that you suffer an increased risk of melanoma, simply through being inside and having sunlight shine on you through the window, while you just sit there? Get off your butt and get outside, already! You should have at least 30 minutes of sunshine every day – believe it or not, this actually reduces your risk of malignant melanoma.

Have you ever heard of blood clots?

If you’ve ever had a blood clot, you’re lucky if everything on you still works. Believe it or not, sitting still for only six hours (such as on a trip or at your desk… or in front of the boob tube) can cause a blood clot to form in your calf. Your natural instinct will be to rub it away – which is likely to kill you. If you’re lucky, it may only travel to your genitals and render you impotent. But if this just isn’t your day, it can cause a stroke or a heart attack. Just get up and move, already!
